Finding Balance: A Guide for Busy People to Beat Stress with Mindfulness

Updated: Nov 21, 2023

In today's busy world, many women, like myself, often find ourselves trying to do it all—managing work, family, and everything in between. It's not easy, and the stress that comes with it is real. In this article, we'll talk about the specific challenges we face and how practicing mindfulness can actually help us deal with overwork and stress in a simple and practical way. We must find balance in the madness.

At 56, my life is a mix of work, family, church, a side hustle, teaching at a local college, and running a small non-profit. It may seem like a lot, but for me, it's about purpose and fulfillment.

Through various life chapters, including being a single parent, I've learned resilience and the true meaning of sacrifice. Now, as my children have grown, I've embraced new opportunities. My commitment to community service led me to start a non-profit, proving that age is no barrier to making a positive impact. Teaching at the college brings both joy and challenges, and my faith keeps me grounded. The side hustle is my creative outlet, where I turn my skills and passions into something uniquely mine.

Balancing these roles isn't always easy, but it's a constant adjustment. What I've learned is the importance of self-care—taking moments for mindfulness or a quiet cup of tea to stay centered.

Understanding the Challenges:

As women, we're expected to be great at our jobs, take care of our families, and still keep everything running smoothly. This can be overwhelming and stressful. Society's expectations and the pressure to be perfect only add to the load we carry.

Mindfulness as a Helpful Tool:

Mindfulness is like a superpower that can help us deal with stress. Here's how it can make a real difference:

1. Spotting and Handling Stress:

Mindfulness helps us notice when stress is creeping in. By recognizing it early, we can take steps to manage it better.

2. Getting Stronger:

Mindfulness exercises, like meditation, help us build mental strength. They make it easier to handle tough situations without feeling overwhelmed.

3. Setting Limits:

Mindfulness teaches us to set healthy boundaries. Knowing our limits and communicating them helps us avoid burning out.

4. Balancing Work and Life:

Mindfulness helps us stay focused on the present moment. This means we can be fully present at work and at home, creating a more balanced life.

5. Being Kind to Ourselves:

Mindfulness reminds us to be kind to ourselves. It encourages self-care without feeling guilty, so we can keep going without burning out.

Easy Steps to Start Mindful Living:

1. Quick Meditation: Try short, daily meditation to calm your mind.

2. Deep Breaths: Take intentional deep breaths during the day to relax.

3. Take Breaks: Schedule short breaks to step away and refresh your mind.

4. Write it Down: Keep a simple journal to jot down your thoughts, feelings, and things you're grateful for.

5. Move Mindfully: Include easy activities like yoga or a short walk to boost your physical and mental well-being.

In a nutshell, if you're feeling stressed and overwhelmed, practicing mindfulness can be a game-changer. It's about taking small steps every day to bring more balance and calm into our lives. Remember, you've got the power to make a difference in your own well-being, one mindful breath at a time.

Remember, your story is still unfolding. By embracing the complexity of your own juggling act, you not only enrich your life but also contribute to the vibrant tapestry of the world around you. Seize the opportunity to live authentically and with purpose, one step at a time. Your unique journey is waiting to be celebrated!
